Bone China is a higher quality porcelain which contains actual bone ash. This not only strengthens the piece but also whitens it. Another distinctive characteristic is the translucence of bone china: holding it to a light with your hand behind the china should reveal the shadow of your hand. Regular porcelain will not do so.
