A Family Affair

A FAMILY AFFAIR
Now that you and Mr. Right are newlyweds, it's time for the parents of two such fabulous people to mix and mingle. Here’s your guide to introducing the in-laws to your new home.
ROOM SERVICE
Choose a game plan for the evening and map it out together. To really wow them, decide what feeling to evoke when they enter–is it warm and cozy or cool and modern? Once you have chosen, find the perfect traffic pattern. For example, start with cocktails and appetizers in the living room, then move into the dining room for dinner, dessert and coffee. Deck out each destination with your wedding gifts, making sure your fabulous wedding pictures and videos are prominently displayed.

PREP WORK
Set yourself up for a fabulous evening that is guaranteed to receive raves form your mother-in-law by doing as much as you can before hand. The first step is to set a gorgeous table–get started with a tablecloth, placemats or both. Place dinner plates one inch from the edge of the table, with the fork to the left side. The knife goes on the right side, blade inward and the spoon to the right of the knife. Put any other forks or spoons next to their counterparts, i.e. spoons next to spoons. Glassware goes above the plate, on the side of the knife and spoon–all else should be placed where they can be reached. Additional dishes and flatware should be used if there is the slightest chance it is needed. What is a couple of more dishes for the dishwasher?

OPENING ACT
When the in-laws walk in greet them with cocktails and appetizers. Use the small plates from your registry to serve up some tasty snacks and break out the new barware, creating your own signature sip that reflects your personality as a couple. This is the best time to call attention to the strategically placed wedding photos to encourage oohs and ahs!
TO DINE FOR
Once they have settled in, lead your new family into the dining room. Your table will be looking fabulous with all of your new flatware and dinnerware, so simply show everyone to their seats. Bring out each course as it’s ready, rather than putting everything on the table at once, this will ensure everything is served hot and fresh from the oven. End the evening sweetly by debuting your soon-to-be favorite family dessert.
ENJOY
Sit back relax and have fun! Accept the fact that you can’t control or choreograph every moment, instead focus on making an incredible impression and defuse any foreseeable problems before the doorbell rings.
