FAQs

Bakeware

How do I care for my Oneida bakeware?
Porcelain Bakeware: This versatile bakeware is easy to clean and completely dishwasher safe. Use care when loading pieces in the machine so they do not bump against other pieces. Avoid harsh detergents with citrus additives. Delicate and oversized pieces should go in the top rack.

Non-stick Bakeware: While dishwasher safe, the best way to preserve the non-stick finish is to wash by hand using regular dish detergent and a soft sponge. Never allow sharp utensils like knife blades to come into contact with the silicone finish. Do not use steel wool or abrasive sponges as they can also scratch and remove the non-stick surface.

Cookware

How do I care for my Oneida cookware?
Hard-Anodized Cookware and Aluminum Cookware: These pots and pans are easy to clean thanks to the nonstick surface lining each piece. To preserve the nonstick coating, wash by hand using regular dish detergent and a soft sponge. Never use steel wool or abrasive scrubbers as they can scratch the finish. Always use nylon, bamboo, and silicone utensils. Avoid contact with metal which can remove the non-stick surface. Glass lids may go in the top rack of the dishwasher.

Stainless Steel Cookware: Like our flatware, Oneida cookware is dishwasher safe. However, to ensure a long life of use, washing by hand in hot water with a mild detergent is the recommended method. Dry with a clean cloth. If you choose to place it in the dishwasher, the top rack is the safest place and less prone to bumps. Do not let your cookware rest against other metals or sharp items in the dishwasher.

Cutlery

How do I care for my Oneida cutlery?
Good quality cutlery will last a lifetime with proper care. Because cutlery should be cleaned immediately after use to prevent damage caused by certain foods, it is recommended that you wash it by hand in warm soapy water. Using a soft brush or sponge, gently rub each side of the blade. Rinse your knives thoroughly removing all soap. Dry by blotting with a soft cloth or paper towel.

Tips:

  • Store knives in block or on a magnetic rack.
  • Never place knives in sink filled with other items. This can damage the blade and cause accidents.
  • Always use a cutting board. Countertops and other hard surfaces can dull the blade.

Can I put my knives in the dishwasher for cleaning?
Dishwasher detergents and heat are hard on knife metals. For this reason, we do not recommend dishwasher use for cutlery knives. The best way to care of your cutlery is to hand wash all your knives in warm soap water. Allow them to air dry completely before returning them to their block.

How do I sharpen my knives?
You can have your knives sharpened professionally. Many cookware shops offer sharpening services, and if you can't find one locally there are also online sharpeners who will renew your edges for a fee, plus the cost of shipping.

Dinnerware

What do you mean when you say decaled dinnerware?
A decal is a pattern that is applied to dinnerware prior to firing. Decals are applied as a sheet, much the same way you would apply a stick-on tattoo. The decal is slid off a paper backing, and it sticks to the unfired ceramic. Using a squeegee, a factory worker gently removes any residual water and air bubbles out from under the decal. Once applied, the entire piece goes into the kiln.

Does Oneida dinnerware meet FDA standards for lead and cadmium content?
Yes, all Oneida dinnerware meets or exceeds the FDA standards. The United States Food and Drug Administration has very strict standards as to the level of these particles that are acceptable. All dinnerware for sale in the US must meet these standards and we are extremely diligent in fully complying with these standards.

Is my Oneida dinnerware dishwasher/microwave safe?
Yes! For easy cleaning and heating, your dinnerware is both microwave and dishwasher safe.

Flatware

Is it possible to order a single piece for my existing set?
Individual serving and place setting pieces, also known as “open stock”, may be available for purchase separately. This allows you to replace pieces that may be lost or damaged or to simply add to your set over time. However please note that not all patterns have open stock items.
To find out if you can purchase flatware items individually type the pattern name in the search bar in the top right corner of the website. If the items are not listed separately, we do not sell them individually.

What does 18/10, 18/8, and 18/0 stainless mean?
These percentages represent the amount of chrome and nickel in the steel alloy that we use to make our products. Chrome is added to aid the steel in corrosion resistance and the nickel is added for a soft, silver-like luster. 18/10 means that the metal has 18% chrome and 10% nickel. 18/8 stainless has 18% chrome and 8% nickel. 18/0 has 18% chrome and 0% nickel.

How do I care for my stainless flatware?
Before using your Oneida stainless for the first time, we recommend that you wash it thoroughly in your dishwasher or by hand. To keep your flatware looking its best, we suggest the following tips:

In a Dishwasher: Your Oneida stainless is dishwasher safe and stain resistant. However, if any discoloration should develop (caused by hard water), use a stainless cleaner, and follow instructions carefully.

By Hand: Always use hot water and a mild soap or detergent. Rinse in clean, hot water and dry immediately.

General Information: Avoid harsh detergents containing lemon, as they can harm flatware surfaces. Wash your stainless as soon as possible after each meal. This will prevent prolonged contact with harsh, acidic foods that may cause discoloration, corroding or pitting. It is also preferable to wash your stainless separately from aluminum, sterling or silver-plate. Never let your flatware soak (even in plain water) or leave unwashed overnight. Knife blades are particularly sensitive to acidic foods, soaking in water and air-drying. Therefore, it is very important that you wash your knives promptly after each use, and dry immediately. Do not store flatware in plastic or other wrappings that can trap moisture. Keep knives and any other hollow-handled flatware away from open flames and other sources of extreme heat. You should not try to sharpen any knives that have serrated edges, as it will damage the blade.

Why do stains occur on some stainless flatware?
Stainless steel flatware is stainless, but is not absolutely stain proof, especially under unfavorable conditions. Such common foods such as tea, coffee, vinegar, salt, mustard, mayonnaise, and eggs may stain, pit, or corrode your flatware when present for prolonged periods. Certain minerals in our tap water may also affect flatware. Even the detergent used to wash our flatware in the dishwasher may harm flatware surfaces.

How do I remove stains from my stainless flatware?
Use a good quality stainless cleaner to remove the build-up caused by minerals.

Is Oneida stainless dishwasher safe?
Yes! Your Oneida stainless flatware is meant to be used and enjoyed. We suggest that you rinse your flatware after use before placing in the dishwasher. Any scented detergent (i.e. lemon or orange) or detergents with citric acid, such as GelPacs, are not suggested.

How should flatware be put into the dishwasher?
Load the dishwasher with the handles of the spoons and forks facing down and the handles of the knives up.

How should one care for sterling, silver-plated, or gold-plated flatware?
When not in use, keep these types of flatware in a closed drawer or chest lined with tarnish-resistant cloth. We do not recommend any of these three metals to be put in the dishwasher. If you choose to place them in a dishwasher, ensure that you do not mix metals in the same load. Remove flatware before the drying cycle and hand dry. Also, many automatic dishwashing detergents contain bleach that may remove the oxidation that was used to highlight pattern detail. Sterling and silver-plate do require periodic polishing with high-quality silver polish.

What is included in a place setting?
A single place setting includes a dinner spoon, teaspoon, dinner fork, salad fork and dinner knife.

What is the difference between a dinner spoon and teaspoon?
The dinner spoon, which is the larger of the two, is used for eating soups, cereals, and desserts. The smaller spoon, or teaspoon, can be used for eating cereal and soups, as well as stirring coffee and tea.
Similarly, a dinner fork is larger compared to a smaller salad fork.

What is in a Hostess Set, Serving Set and an Entertainment Set?
Hostess Sets: gravy ladle, tablespoon, sugar spoon
Serving Sets: Serving fork, butter knife, pierced tablespoon
Entertainment Set: Casserole spoon, Dessert server
